The chocolate that we eat for various reasons like when we are happy, sad, depressed, over excited, normal, insane, nervous, anxious, hungry and the list goes on and on. But do you know that once it was used as a currency??!!!!
The Aztecs, they were a Mesoamerican culture that existed in central Mexico from 1300 to 1521, they used Nahuatl as their main communication language. They believed that cacao seeds were the gift from Quetzalcoatl, the god of wisdom. It was considered so pure that it was used a currency, although at that time it was a drink that was consumed in its natural taste ( bitter) with spices and corn puree.
The Aztecs extracted twice a year from the cacao-growing region of Soconusco in southern Mexico. Next to the jaguar skins are two loads of cacao beans, which were used as currency as well as the drink of the elite.
The Aztecs traded cacao beans with Mayans and in the 1500s they purchased a turkey hen for 100 beans!!!
Actually, it was believed that chocolate has aphrodisiac powers and to give the drinker the strength. Some ancient records tell us that in the 16th century Aztec emperor Montezuma drank three gallons of chocolate a day to gain libido powers.
This was the reason why everyone wanted to cacao beans and they readily traded any commodities with the Aztecs.
Comment down!! when do you eat most of the chocolates???
