India has a rich tradition of masks which are made in different parts of the country. Masks portray the various moods get embossed on our faces as reflections of the various emotions and states of mind that an individual goes through.
This art has always been an important part of Indian culture,especially in Eastern and Southern India. These were used for ritualistic purpose or in dances like the Martual dance, Chhau of West Bengal. Earlier, these masks were made from paper,wood and wrought iron.Today artist use new materials and adds decoration of artificial stones,pearls and everything that’s cheaply available.
Mask appears to have a face of demon and has a furious looks, some have slight smile on the face and masks from West Bengal and other eastern states are inspired from birds and animals which are extinct now. These masks are not only important in Indian culture but they are of same importance in other countries.
The flavor of masks still remains as fresh as ever even though today, the focus of the use of masks has shifted from the performing arts and religious ceremonies to the handicrafts market. But then also masks continues to be a source of mystery and fascination.
