Since childhood, we were told the definition of the matter, that anything that occupies space and has mass qualifies to be called as matter. But now a question might arise what is space made of ??? Does it have any particles but we are told that it hadn’t. But the reality was completely different.
We know that atoms are made up of electrons and nucleons, and an atom is almost empty. If you consider that an atom was just large as you arm span then nucleus would have been smaller than the width of your hair.
And we have also discovered that protons and electrons are basically made up of quarks. Same is for space there are also some extreme small particles and we can come to a conclusion that empty space is full of quarks and gluon field fluctuations. And if space had no particles then it would have been the most unstable object but it isn’t and the most important point that these fluctuations are necessary for us to live in this universe.
