Whenever we talk about karma this is the picture which always strikes us. Lord Krishna preaching and guide to the greatest warrior Arjuna. But in this blog let us deal with some myths that have traveled through the centuries.
What is Karma?
According to Bhagavad Gita ( 3 rd Chapter), Karma is basically an action which is done in a mood of service and accepting the action as a duty. Sri Krishna tells Arjuna (3.8 BG)- Perform your prescribed duty for doing so is better than not working. One cannot even maintain one’s physical body without work. Here the supreme personality of Godhead is informing us to perform our duty rather than going out to the forest for spiritual advancement.
Myths and the reality
It’s a common myth among students that one would have to give up their duties for the sake of their spiritual advancement and go into a secluded spot.
But Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita says that one in any condition would have to perform their duties and their Karma. As it is impossible to maintain even our physical body without work.
There’s one more myth quite prevalent, that Lord Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita that one should do Karma and should not think of the result . Those who support this statement they quote this shloka-
Karmany Eva Dhikaraste Ma Phalesu Kadacana Ma Karma Phala Hetur Bhur Ma Te Sango Stv Aharmani ( Bg 2.47)
- Real Meaning- You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to
fruits of action. Never consider thyself the cause of the results of your activities, and never
be attached to not doing your duty.
Hence, Lord Krishna is not in any way giving us permission to perform any Karma, he is clearly not telling us to do whatever we want to. In a further Shloka, we will get to know
about how to perform any action/Karma.
Just for the hint- Yajnar that Karmano Nyatra Loko Yam Karma Bandhanah Tad- Artham Karma Kaunteya Muktha Sangah Samacna
- Work done as a sacrifice for Vishnu has to be performed, otherwise, work causes bondage in this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your prescribed duties for his satisfaction, and in that way, you will always remain free from bondage.
Karma has linger around each and every step that you take, it doesn’t matter what quality of thoughts you may produce but until you are not turning them into actions you are safe!
